Alor Diving: Complete Guide to Pantar Strait & Beyond

Alor diving centers on the Pantar Strait in far-eastern Indonesia, where cold upwellings from the Savu Sea feed anemone fields, steep walls, world-class muck bays and schooling hammerheads. Most divers explore it by liveaboard between April and November, when seas are settled and visibility runs 20–40 m.

Alor sits at the eastern tip of the Lesser Sunda chain, about 1,000 km east of Bali. The archipelago — Alor, Pantar, Pura, Kepa, Ternate and a scatter of smaller islands — wraps around a deep strait that funnels the Indonesian Throughflow. That single fact explains almost everything divers love here: the fish density, the cold thermoclines, the currents, and the pelagics that ride them. This page is the master guide; each section links to a deeper resource.

Conditions: What Diving Alor Actually Feels Like

Two currents define the experience. The first is horizontal: tidal flow through the strait can run from gentle to genuinely strong, which is why every reputable operator dives the exposed sites at slack tide and briefs negative entries when needed. The second is vertical: upwellings stack cold layers under warm surface water.

  • Water temperature: 26–29°C at the surface for most of the season; thermoclines around 20–25 m can drop to 22°C during the August–November upwelling peak. A 5 mm suit with a hood is the standard recommendation.
  • Visibility: 20–40 m in the dry season, best from August to November; sheltered muck bays trade visibility for critters.
  • Currents: minimal inside Kalabahi and Beangabang bays; moderate to strong on strait sites, strongest around new and full moon.

Timing matters more here than in most Indonesian destinations — the month-by-month picture is on our best time for Alor liveaboard diving page.

What You Will See

Alor compresses the entire Indonesian portfolio into one strait. On a single week you can log schooling scalloped hammerheads off north Pantar, rhinopias and wunderpus in the muck, anemone carpets at Clown Valley so dense the reef disappears, plus mola, mobula, dogtooth tuna and passing whales in season. The complete species rundown — and when each shows up — is in the Alor marine life guide.

Who Alor Suits

Honest answer: Alor rewards divers who already enjoy current. If your logbook includes comfortable drift dives, the strait will be a highlight of your diving life. Newer divers are not excluded — itineraries alternate sheltered muck days with strait days, and guides grade each site briefing to the group. Non-divers ride along happily too; see the Alor snorkeling guide for how surface days work.

Liveaboard vs Land-Based

Alor has a handful of small land-based dive operations around Kalabahi and Kepa, and they do good work in their home range. The case for a liveaboard is coverage and timing: sleeping aboard lets you hit Kal’s Dream at dawn slack, cross to Beangabang for a muck afternoon, and anchor under Sirung volcano by dinner. Our Alor liveaboard routes page compares every itinerary length, and the cost guide explains exactly what you pay for. Divers weighing Alor against other regions can start with Alor vs the alternatives.

How a Trip Comes Together

Most guests fly Bali or Jakarta → Kupang, then take the 55-minute Wings Air hop to Alor’s Mali Airport, where the crew meets you for boarding in Kalabahi. Trips run 3 to 7 days within Alor, or longer when the boat repositions along the Maumere–Alor route or across the Banda Sea. Vessels in our network are traditional phinisi rebuilt for diving — specifications and cabin layouts are on the Alor phinisi fleet page. Divers who prefer the Komodo side of the network sail with Pinta Liveaboard, our dive-focused sister vessel.

A Typical Day on an Alor Dive Boat

The rhythm is set by the tide table, not the clock. A standard day runs four dives: a dawn drop on a strait site at slack, breakfast on the crossing, a mid-morning wall or seamount, a long surface interval over lunch while the current peaks, a sheltered muck or reef dive in the afternoon, and a night dive at anchor for those still hungry. Guides re-check the flow at every site before anyone kits up — in Alor, the plan on the whiteboard is always written in pencil.

Between dives the deck life is its own reward: dolphins working the strait, Sirung and Lewotolok steaming on the horizon, village canoes trading fruit alongside. Alor is one of the last places in Indonesia where the view between dives competes with the dives.

Conservation and the Local Picture

Alor’s reefs remain in strong condition for a simple reason: light fishing pressure, no mass tourism, and communities that still hold customary marine tenure over their home reefs. Operators here work with village agreements, pay reef fees where they apply, and brief guests on no-touch, no-glove diving as standard. The archipelago sits inside the Coral Triangle’s biodiversity core, and treating it accordingly is both ethics and self-interest — the product being sold is the intact ecosystem.

Alor Diving FAQ

Is Alor diving suitable for beginners?

Parts of it are. Kalabahi Bay and Beangabang Bay are sheltered, shallow and nearly current-free, so newer divers do well there. The signature Pantar Strait sites such as Kal’s Dream and The Great Wall run strong currents and suit divers with drift experience — typically 30 to 50 logged dives or more.

How many dive sites does Alor have?

Operators work roughly 40 to 50 named sites across the Pantar Strait, Kalabahi Bay, and the islands of Pura, Kepa, Ternate and Pantar. A one-week liveaboard usually covers 18 to 25 of them.

Why is the water cold in Alor?

The Indonesian Throughflow pushes cold, nutrient-rich water up from the Savu Sea through the strait. Thermoclines around 20 to 25 m can drop the temperature from about 28°C to 22°C within a few metres — the same upwellings that attract hammerheads, mola and whales.

Is Alor better by liveaboard or land-based resort?

Liveaboards reach the full spread of sites — north Pantar hammerhead walls, Beangabang muck, and the strait — in one trip and time each dive to slack tide. Land-based diving works well for Kalabahi Bay and nearby strait sites but involves long daily boat rides to the far corners.
